Farewell

It is time to say "good bye" to Xanga.  I am now blogging at http://andygiessman.blogspot.com/.  Please stop by for a visit.  This new blog is for information and community.  It has come to my attention  lately that blogging can be a powerful tool in church ministry and the blogspot will help me do that better.

I will not take down this Xanga site for a while.  It is good to see what you all are up to.

God bless.

Andy

Leaning Forward

Its amazing to be part of an organization that has purpose.  God has given me the privilege to help pastor one of the greatest churches on the planet.  No, its not Willow Creek or Harvest.  It does not have the size and resources of McLean Bible or Saddleback.  So what makes it so great?  Allow me to explain.

New Life Baptist Church in Scranton, PA exists to Connect Real People to a Real God.  So what?  Many churches have catchy slogans and powerful vision statements, right?  Well, we are a church that takes that mandate seriously.  It is our desire to be able to claim Scranton for Christ.  Plain and simple.  The interesting thing is that we ACT on it.  We don't just sit around and wait for something to happen.  We prayerfully consider where we are, the resources available and use them for the glory of God.  Pretty cool.

We have the freedom to use our God-given creativity to think of ways to best communicate the only message that brings hope.  In the past we have used steak, balloons, video, audio, broken coffee pots, park benches, movies, 3 Doors Down, a pack of smokes, and palm fronds to illustrate and explain who God is and how we can know Him.  As long as Scripture does not prohibit it, its fair game (uh, we didn't smoke the smokes, just so you know).  The story of the Gospel is the most important tale to be told and we believe God wants us to use tools to capture people's attention.  And we can do that without EVER dilluting it.

The leadership team is perhaps one of the best aspects of the ministry.  Because we are sooo talented? No, because we work together on everything, shunning personal victory, in order to effectively navigate the ship.  There is a band of brothers standing at the helm that is intent on sailing into harm's way.

This past Sunday we hosted a "Friend Day".  For weeks we encouraged the people to invite their family and friends to come this event.  We shared the Gospel.  People came to Christ.  Praise God!  It was a good day.

We are not afraid to ask the "what if" questions.  What if we could plan an event that would reach out to emergency workers, professionals, or unwed mothers?  What if we could develop a ministry that would give us access to the biker bar across the street?  (The BAR?!?!?! Yup, the bar)  What if we could utilize the arts in a way that grabs the attention of a cold-hearted person?  The list is endless.

We understand we have a mission and time is short.  It is life and death and the souls of mankind are on the line.  Do we want to move out to the burbs where it is nice and safe? No way!  We engage our culture right where they are.

I hope your church is mission minded.  Not missions minded.  That means simply thinking foreign ministry (that's not a bad thing).  I mean a church that has a passion for the people on your street.  A deep desire to be able to dance around the throne of the King together someday.  The alternative is not very palatable.

If it is not, why not?  When was the last time your local body got together to weep and pray for the souls of your community?  If you need to act, act.  Do something.  You won't be sorry.  If you are searching for a place that has purpose, community, and creativity well, see you Sunday.

Calling Sons (and daughters) of Thunder,

Andy

A Patriotic Rant

When did it become of so fashionable and politically correct to hate the United States.  I understand we have enemies in the world who would love nothing more than to have the United States cease to exist, but that is not who I am referring to.  Why do some Americans hate America so much?  I really don't get it.  I understand that some may disagree with the foreign policy and that is ok.  That is what a free society is all about.  But hat America?  Not proud to be an a citizen of the United States?  Why?

Some try to say it is because we are a nation of wealth and prosperity.  So what?  Is it because if you are a tried for a crime you are considered innocent until proven guilty?  Maybe its because we give other nations vast amounts of aid in material and cash.  Maybe its because we stand by our allies and do what is right in the world no matter what other nations think.  Perhaps because we live in a nation where women are free to do whatever they please without fear of persecution.  How about the fact you can practice any religion you want?  Or this one:  if the people do not like the way their government is run they can CHANGE IT in the voting booth.  Interesting.

I, for one, am very proud to be citizen of this nation.  Lets look at a few reasons why....First READ a copy of the Constitution.  (many never have) and look for the biblical principles in that and the Declaration of Independence.  Secondly think for a minute about our commitment to Israel.  See what the Bible says about the nations that stand with her.  If you choose to debate me on this one, go ahead.  You will lose.  How about this one...because of our actions in Iraq, millions can now hear the Gospel.  Think for a minute about the tireless pursuit of liberty by people like Ronald Reagan who, because of his tireless efforts, the ENTIRE country of Russia is free.  No longer are Christians sent to the Gulag for chasing God. (if this is foreign to you, do yourself a favor and read a little history)

My heart swells with pride when I see a young man or woman in uniform bravely marching into harms way.  Why?  Because we do not fight for real estate but for freedom.  Read my last post.  A pastor from Korea stood before hundreds of people and saluted the veterans of the Korean war.  He said, "without your service and sacrifice there would be no churches in South Korea.  There would be no South Korea".  Awesome.

Whenever I see a member of the armed forces in someplace like the airport I thank them for their service.  Without them no body would have the right to complain about the greatest country on earth.  Josh, thank you!

The problems we face and rift in the nation is great.  I understand that, but hate?  There have been men in the Oval office that I did not vote for but I respected them and their office and I prayed for them.  Even when they were guilty of criminal activity like, say, lying to Congress (for starters).  But I would never had said I didn't want to be here.

Know this, I am a citizen of Heaven first and an American second.  If I ever have to choose between the two, my Savior will win.  I am glad he saw fit to let me live here.

By the way, for those of you who loathe living here so much; here is an idea.  Maybe we could raise money for a one-way ticket to the country of your choosing.  Somewhere warm and sunny like Sudan or Iran, maybe?
